Day 7: Giving My Heart to the Sacred Heart

We at Catholic Holy Hour are offering eight days of prayer to the Sacred Heart honoring the apparitions of Jesus during the Octave of Corpus Christi (June 13-20, 1675… exactly 350 years ago!) in which He gave the Sacred Heart devotions to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque.

The Golden Chapel of the Sacred Heart

A Sonnet Crown to the Sacred Heart as Healer
VII

Like stirred water, Love came as a surprise
inside the gold chapel, under its dome.
Restored—my blindness, deafness, deadness dies.
There with the Sacred Heart, there I am home—
The chapel’s where I trust, let go of shame,
and give my heart. He waits there with His wise
gaze lowered—for He knows each person’s name,
his Trinity of fingers, raised. Those eyes!
The Savior points to His Heart: burning grief,
love, mercy. As I pray, above my head,
around the Sacred Heart staue, relief—
of paralytics; blind men; deaf and dead;
all these who were made new through grace, belief—

Ponder and Pray Questions:

  1. The poem includes the verse, “Like stirred water, Love came as a surprise… my blindness, deafness, deadness dies.” How has God surprised you in your life? Over the past year?
  2. Speaking of surprises…listen to this homage to Jesus of Gethsemane, set to music in a classic country and folk style. The Catholic Holy Hour team was surprised to discover such a poignant prayer in this unexpected but moving style and genre. Imagine yourself as part of the journey the song describes. The lyrics include these words: “Neath the old olive trees went the Saviour alone on His knees. ‘Not my will… Thine be done’ cried the Father’s own Son, as He knelt ‘neath the old olive trees.” If you could kneel next to Jesus Gethsemane, what would you pray?
  3. How does time praying with Christ in Gethsemane, offering Him consolation, heal your own heart?
